Robert's Western World is the traditional honky-tonk at 416 Broadway, and the thing most people are looking for is the Recession Special: a fried bologna sandwich, chips, a MoonPie and a PBR, currently listed at $6 US on Robert's own site (checked 25 August 2026). There is never a cover charge, the bar runs 10 a.m. to 3 a.m. every day, and it is all ages until 6 p.m. and 21-plus after that. Everything else below is the detail that decides whether it belongs in your evening.

What is the Recession Special?

It is Robert's combo plate, and the reason a lot of people walk in at all. The venue describes it as a fried bologna sandwich, piled high, served with chips, a MoonPie and an ice-cold PBR. The listed price on Robert's own website is $6 US as of 25 August 2026.

Two honest caveats. First, that price has been quoted at various figures across the internet for years, and older blog posts and social videos are the reason — always take the number from the venue rather than from a listicle. Second, it is genuinely a bologna sandwich: griddled, salty, unfussy bar food, not a gourmet interpretation of one. That is the point of it, and it is why it has survived as the cheapest recognisable meal on a street where a round of drinks can cost more than dinner.

We had two of them on 17 August 2026 and the bill came to $12 plus tip, so the listed price is the one you actually pay at the till. It is also the thing I keep coming back to. We spent that trip working along Broadway checking out the bands, but we made a point of ending up back at Robert's for the Recession Special. There is something about that sandwich — whatever time of day we walked in, it hit the spot.

What else is on the menu?

The kitchen — the Honky Tonk Grill — runs a short list built around the same idea: a cheeseburger, a chicken tender basket, a grilled cheese, cheese curds with ranch or marinara, onion rings, sweet potato fries, regular fries, and MoonPies on their own. Most plates come with chips, with fries or onion rings available as a paid upgrade.

Robert's does not publish prices for those items on its site, so this guide does not quote any. If a page tells you exactly what a cheeseburger costs at Robert's this month, be sceptical about where that number came from.

Hours, and the 21-plus rule after 6 p.m.

Robert's is open 10 a.m. to 3 a.m. daily, and it is an all-ages room until 6 p.m. After 6 p.m. it is 21 and over. This is the single most important line in this guide for anyone travelling with teenagers, because it is easy to plan a Broadway evening that quietly excludes half your party.

If you are travelling with under-21s and want them to see a real honky-tonk band, go in the afternoon. The music starts late morning and runs all day, so a 4 p.m. set is a genuine experience, not a consolation prize — and it is markedly easier to find a seat.

We went in at 3 p.m. and again at 10 p.m. the same day, and there was no line either time — worth knowing, because the queues you see photographed on Broadway are usually outside the big multi-storey bars rather than this one.

Is there a cover charge?

No. Robert's states plainly that there is never a cover. The economics work differently: the bands are paid out of a tip bucket that gets passed through the room roughly once an hour, and you can also tip at the stage to request a song.

Bring small US bills. This is the part visitors from Canada most often get wrong — tapping a card for a beer is easy, but the musicians are working for cash, and a room full of people who did not bring any is a bad night for the band. Budget a few dollars per set and you are participating properly rather than watching for free.

Why Robert's is different from the rest of Broadway

Lower Broadway has changed a great deal. A large share of the street is now celebrity-branded multi-storey bars — Luke Bryan's 32 Bridge, Kid Rock's Big Ass Honky Tonk, Jelly Roll's Goodnight Nashville and others — built around rooftops, DJ sets and modern pop-country. They are genuinely fun and they are not what Robert's is.

Robert's is a single narrow room with a wall of cowboy boots for sale, a small stage, and bands playing traditional country, western swing and rockabilly. The musicianship is the draw. It is the room people mean when they say they want to hear real country music in Nashville, and it is the one I point clients to first when that is the brief.

The afternoon we were there, the band was working through proper old country — Ghost Riders in the Sky and more Johnny Cash — in front of a room that knew the words. That is the difference from the rest of the street in a single set.

Neither is better in the abstract. If your group wants a rooftop, a cocktail list and a DJ, Robert's will feel small and old-fashioned. If your group came to Nashville because of the music, the mega-bars will feel like they could be anywhere.

When to go, and how long to stay

Weekday afternoons and early evenings are the sweet spot: the bands are excellent, the room is navigable, and under-21s are still allowed in before 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights are shoulder-to-shoulder from roughly 8 p.m., and you will likely stand.

We were standing at the bar when we arrived and had a table about five minutes later, which is roughly how it goes outside the Friday and Saturday crush.

Plan on one or two sets. Broadway is a walking street and the honky-tonks are free to enter, so the standard way to spend an evening is to move every 45 minutes or so rather than settle in one room for four hours.

Who should go — and who might prefer somewhere else

Go if you want traditional country played well, if you would rather spend $6 on lunch than $40, if you are travelling with a mixed-age group and can get there before 6 p.m., or if you only have one honky-tonk in you and want it to be the authentic one.

The clients I send here are the ones who love country music and are up for a proper night out.

Consider elsewhere if you need table service and a reservation, if you want a rooftop and a view, if your group is large and wants to sit together, or if the appeal of Broadway for you is the modern country scene rather than its roots. Robert's takes no reservations and has no rooftop, and it is not trying to.
