Peru is a country with one enormously popular destination wrapped in some of the most unforgiving logistics in travel. Machu Picchu is not a place you turn up at. It is a chain of bookings — train, bus, timed entry, specific circuit — each of which has to line up, and most of which live on your phone.
Machu Picchu is a logistics problem
Your ticket specifies an entry time and a numbered circuit, and both are enforced. You cannot arrive early and wait, you cannot wander onto a different route, and you cannot rebook on the day if you miss it. Tickets sell out weeks or months ahead in high season.
Around that sit the other moving parts. Trains from Ollantaytambo or Poroy to Aguas Calientes run to a fixed timetable and are booked separately. The bus up the switchbacks from Aguas Calientes has a queue that can run to an hour in peak season. Working backwards from your entry time through the bus queue and the train schedule is the actual planning task, and doing it with live information rather than a printed guess is what makes the day work.

The Inca Trail is four days offline
If you are trekking rather than taking the train, plan for no signal. The classic four-day Inca Trail has effectively none, and permits sell out months in advance. The same applies to the Salkantay and Lares routes.
Tell people at home your dates and when you will reappear, download everything you need beforehand, and hand any time-sensitive arrangements to your operator before you set off.
Altitude changes your first day
Lima is at sea level. Cusco is around 3,400 metres and Puno is higher still. Flying from one to the other in an hour and a half is a genuine physiological event, and most people feel it — headache, breathlessness, poor sleep on the first night.
The practical consequence is that your first day in Cusco should be lighter than you planned, and being able to move a booking, check whether a tour can be shifted, or find a pharmacy without walking across a hilly city at altitude is worth something real.
What coverage is honestly like
Lima, Cusco, Arequipa, Trujillo and Puno all have solid 4G with 5G in the larger centres, and the Sacred Valley towns — Pisac, Urubamba, Ollantaytambo — are covered. Aguas Calientes has service. The main highways along the coast are well served.
The Andes are where it goes. High passes drop out routinely, the Colca Canyon has real gaps, Rainbow Mountain and the trekking routes have little or nothing, and the Amazon around Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado has coverage in town and essentially none at a jungle lodge. Lake Titicaca has service in Puno and thins on the islands.
The networks you will connect to
Claro and Movistar have the widest reach, with Entel and Bitel also operating nationally. A travel eSIM roams onto whichever partner network is strongest where you are, which in Andean terrain is a meaningful advantage over committing to one.
Getting around Lima and Cusco
Uber, Cabify and inDrive all operate in Lima and are how most visitors move around a city where traffic is heavy and taxi fares are negotiated rather than metered. Having the fare fixed in advance removes an argument you are not well placed to win.
Cusco is compact and walkable, but it is walkable at 3,400 metres and uphill in most directions. Being able to call a car when the altitude catches up with you halfway back to your hotel is a small mercy worth having.
Trains, flights and things that move
Domestic flights between Lima and Cusco are frequent and cheap, and morning departures from Cusco are sometimes delayed or cancelled for weather in the mountains. Trains to Aguas Calientes occasionally alter for track conditions in the rainy season.
Both are announced by app and email first. When your Machu Picchu entry time depends on a specific train, learning about a change early is the difference between adjusting and losing the ticket.
How much data you will actually use
Plan on 4 to 6 GB for a week. Navigation, booking coordination and photography are the main draws, and Peru produces a great many photographs.
If you are trekking or heading into the Amazon you will use less, simply because there is nothing to connect to. Do your uploading in Cusco or Lima.
Timing your plan to the trip
Peru itineraries usually run ten days to a fortnight across several regions and altitudes. Choose a plan that outlasts your departure — Lima's airport journey is long and traffic-dependent, and that final run is when live information earns its keep.
Install at home on Wi-Fi before you fly. The profile stays dormant until it first connects to a Peruvian network, so the countdown starts on landing.
Who this suits
Anyone with Machu Picchu tickets, which is nearly everyone — the timed entry and train chain is the single best reason to have data here. Trekkers who need to arrange the days either side of an offline stretch. Travellers adjusting to altitude in Cusco. Lima visitors relying on ride apps. And anyone combining the highlands with the Amazon, where coverage vanishes.
Food, water and looking things up
Peru has become a serious food destination, and the best places in Lima and Cusco book out well ahead — the celebrated Lima restaurants take reservations months in advance. At the other end, the markets and picanterías are where the actual eating happens, and they reward knowing what you are ordering.
The translation camera helps on Spanish menus with regional vocabulary that no phrasebook covers, and being able to check whether somewhere needs a booking before you walk across Miraflores saves the walk.
On the practical side, tap water is not drinkable in most of Peru, and knowing where to buy or refill matters more at altitude, where you should be drinking considerably more than usual. It is a small thing that being connected makes easier.
